Indiana Governor's Office to Present Guinness World Record and Distinguished Hoosier Award in Metamora

Indiana Governor's Office to Present Guinness World Record and Distinguished Hoosier Award in Metamora

Metamora, Indiana – May 8, 2013

2,653 different cookie jars!  Eva "Granny" Fuchs, proprietor of Grannie's Cookie Jars and Ice Cream Parlor in the small historic village of Metamora Indiana is being awarded the Guinness World Record for having collected that number to establish the World's Largest Collection of Cookie Jars.  The award presentation ceremony will be conducted on Friday, May 17, 2013, beginning at 2:00 p.m. on the outdoor patio of Grannie's shop in Metamora.

To honor Grannie's contribution to Indiana tourism efforts, the Indiana Governor's office will present the Guinness World Record Certificate to Granny.

Also, in recognition of the boost to Indiana and Metamora tourism by achieving this award, Governor Mike Pence will honor Granny with a Distinguished Hoosier award.  If the Governor is unable to make the presentations personally, both awards will be presented by the Governor's Chief of Staff, Bill Smith.

The presentation ceremony is open to all.  There will be refreshments provided.  The less-than-one-hour ceremony will include live entertainment provided by Metamora's own Catrina and the Baggy Bottom Boys band.

The total number of jars in Grannie's collection is actually more than 7,000 and growing.  However, the additional 5,000-6,000 are duplicates of others on display.  The entire record-setting collection will be on display at Grannie's during the ceremony.

Metamora, an unincorporated village in southeast Indiana, is a pre-civil-war canal boat town on the Whitewater Canal.  Established in 1838, the village has been a popular tourist destination since the 1960's.  The recent national economic situation has hurt travel to Metamora, and it is hoped that this Guinness World Record collection will draw more visitors to town, along with the Whitewater Valley Railroad and the Indiana State Historic Site operated Grist Mill and Canal Boat ride.
